The stately paintings of John Boyd, all inspired by nature, evoke
a sense of serene calm and beautiful quietude.
A graphic designer by training, Boyd began painting landscapes as
an excuse to re-connect with nature. Boyd drew inspiration from his
childhood, growing up on a small farm in Nebraska. "I had moved
away to the city to study and then work as a graphic designer,"
says Boyd. "I missed the connection to the land I grew up with.
Painting landscapes gave me the excuse to return." For five years,
Boyd would pack up his car nearly every weekend, drive to the countryside
and paint. His artistic talents, honed as a graphic designer, served
him well as a painter and soon Boyd was selling his paintings. He eventually
quite his day job and has been painting professionally for over a decade.
Boyd's masterfully executed landscapes are contemporary, yet possess
a softness and quality of light reminiscent of the Impressionists, a
period from which Boyd has drawn particular inspiration.
A student of the history of painting, Boyd also found inspiration
in the devotional icon paintings of the medieval period. His still lifes,
mostly paintings of single pieces of fruit in textured backgrounds of
grays and tans, recall devotional icon paintings with the aim to illustrate
the singular beauty of nature's bounty, much in the same way icon paintings
attempted to illustrate a single truth about Christ.
