The dynamic and colorful paintings of Jean Paul Beattry are instantly
recognizable the world over. Born in 1958 in southern France, Beattry
has drawn a life-long inspiration from painting fragments of daily life,
culture and environment that once characterized bourgeois life on the
French Mediterranean coast. Each painting is suffused with the golden
sunlight and vibrant colors typical of the Mediterranean.
Beattry's cityscapes recall a simpler life of lazy, sun-drenched afternoons
at the cafe and beach or a stroll down an empty picturesque alley. His
still lifes--richly draped tables topped with fruit, lush flowers, and
teacups--are vibrantly rendered in brilliant colors reminiscent of both
the post-Impressionists and Fauvists of the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. Indeed, Beattry acknowledges these influences as his constant
muse. "Like van Gogh and Gauguin, my paintings are about mood and
expression. And I try to express that mood through the movement and
spatial arrangement of color." says Beattry.
Beattry draws daily inspiration from his meanderings through the villages
of southern France, capturing bits and pieces of a disappearing world.
